Jaden Guillory of Basile cast aside any precedent faster than...(Trouble, Will Robinson, trouble"... - any precedent that may have arisen from a 17-4 major decision loss to South Beauregard's Bryce Fontenot in the Brusly Invitational. The second-seeded Bearcat junior had lost a state finals match in 2021. It was not going to happen again. Guilory dominated the Golden Knights' freshman to win the first of Basile's four individual titles via a 9-4 decision.
The seeding was fine in
this weight class.
The top three
seeds mirrored the 120 lbs. results of the Brusly Invitational.
In that event South Beauregard freshman Bryce Fontenot avenged a January
6th 4-2 dual meet loss to Basile’s Jaden Guillory with a 17-4 MD
semifinals win en route to winning the tournament.
(Fontenot later defeated Guillory 6-2 in the Ken Cole, sealing a 2-1
record over the Basile junior.)
Guillory met third-seeded Wingston Avila in the consolation finals at Brusly and
won decisively via a fall in 0:55.
Avila, an Evangel eighth-grader, was seeded third.
Fourth-seeded Jase Davis of Brusly placed fourth at the Brusly
Invitational and placed third at the Brusly 8, both at 132 lbs.
Davis did not compete at 120 lbs. until the state championships, but his
record was deemed better than the record of De la Salle freshman Jace Wagoner,
who was seeded fifth.
Wagoner placed
third at the George Trygg Memorial and 12th at the Trey Culotta.
He was off of the mats, though, for
almost a full month after that event and missed the Brusly Invitational.
Kade Lounsberry of St. Louis had eight losses to Division III opponents,
including Fontenot, Guillory and Avila.
He and Wagoner both entered the Lakeshore Open, but Wagoner placed
higher, giving the Cavalier the higher state championships seed.
The top six seeds were the
top six placers at the state championships, but only Lounsberry behaved as he
was expected, aside from a quarterfinals
surprise. The
odds-makers lost on everybody else.
Lounsberry was the first to
“break form” when he upset the third-seeded Avila via a fall in 4:50 in the
quarterfinals.
The match was close
until the fall, but Avila only lead it for 33 seconds.
At the Brusly Invitational Avila defeated Lounsberry in a tight 4-3
match.
Fontenot seemed not to care
a whit that Davis had competed at 126 lbs., 132 lbs. and even 138 lbs. during
the season. He needed less than a
minute to dispatch the Panther junior.
Guillory had met Lounsberry in a January 6th dual meet and won
via a fall in 2:54.
He would end
their semifinals match accordingly with another second period fall.

Championship Consolation Rounds
In a rematch of their
quarterfinals match, Davis and Wagoner met in the consolation finals.
Davis again prevailed via a third period fall.
In the fifth-place match, Avila and Lounsberry met to settle their now 1-1
season record against each other.
In
the tie-breaking match, it was Avila who prevailed via a fall in 3:54

Fontenot had a 2-1 season
lead over Guillory come the 120 lbs. Division III finals match.
His 17-4 MD in the Brusly Invitational seemed a bit of a fluke,
though, as the other two matches were much closer - 4-2 for Guillory and 6-2 for
Fontenot.
Guillory did not allow
Fontenot to score in the first 3:30 of this match.
The Basile junior scored a takedown and took a 2-0 lead into the second
period. He then put Fontenot on his
back in the last minute of that round to take a 5-0 lead.
That lasted about two seconds as Fontenot scored a reversal, but Guillory
did the same at the end of the round, taking a 7-2 lead into the third period.
To avoid a Fontenot escape and the point associated with it, Guillory
chose to start the third period standing.
He needed just less than a minute to score a takedown.
Guillory was cited a stalling point with 45 seconds remaining, and
Fontenot added an escape points, but with only seven seconds remaining.
Guillory prevailed 9-4 to win Basile’s first championship of the evening.
