Three champions, two runners-up and a fourth-place finish were enough to earn the Brusly Panthers the first girls team state championship in Louisiana.

Officially, the event was called the Junior Varsity Select State Championships, as it is not an LHSAA-sanctioned Louisiana high school state championship event.

We know better.

Sixty-two young ladies vied for championships in 13 weight classes at Baton Rouge High School on February 4th.  Baton Rouge placed second, followed by St. Amant, South Beauregard and Live Oak.

Sam Houston sophomore Chevy Coleman, a persistent competitor among the boys all season, was voted the event's Outstanding Wrestler after having won the 106 lbs. title.  In the three pool rounds, Coleman demolished her competition via falls in 0:13, 0:15 and 0:24.  In the semifinals she was taken 14 seconds into the second round before she could manage a pin, but she got back on schedule in the finals, winning in 0:39.

The significance of this event cannot be measured by the number of participants or matches held.  These young ladies are the forerunners of something bigger than themselves.
