Alex Rozas may be forgiven for his 17-1 technical fall over Houston
Westside's Santiago Ramirez in the 106 lbs. finals. The extra point for a
fall would still have kept the Rebels under 300 points, and he did well with
three previous falls prior to meeting Shaw's Caden Judice in the semifinals.
A 10-3 win over a talent like Judice is no easy feat. Hopefully, the
freshman's knack for TFs (he has 26 after this event) will not bite him, perhaps
in a close dual meet in which had one match gone another way the five-point TF
would cause a tie-breaking scenario, whereas a pin would "seal the deal."
But what are the odds of a circumstance like that occurring in the next three
weeks?
This weight class was the only one in which the seeding committee was
dead-on. The top-four placers were in a class by themselves, followed by
another class of the 5th and 6th placers, followed by a class of all the rest.
Rozas' seven-point win over Judice was matched only by a 7-0 win in the Texas
Outlaw finals. Santiago had a hard time as well in his semifinals match,
defeating #3 Jacob Kershaw of North Desoto 5-3. Rozas decided to make his
own class in the finals, though, by just dominating Ramirez.
