Royere takes advantage of upsets to gain Houston Westside's second title

It is tough to explain this weight class. For one thing, Layne Rivette of TC was seeded second, yet he had to wrestle a preliminary match. The seeding committee must have known something, though, as Rivette lost his Round One match 6-2 to Rummel's Dylan Stubbs. But then he won six matches in a row to place third over the #8 seed, Collin Bell of North Desoto. One of those matches was a rematch against Stubbs, which Rivette won 6-4 SV. He then defeated #1 Christopher Bacot of Parkway 9-2 in the CSFs.

Bacot was knocked out of the championship bracket in the semifinals by Holy Cross sophomore Henry Mulvihill. Mulvihill beat #4 Cameron Hebert of North Vermillion 6-1 in Round Two, and then Rummel's Mason Schott, who upset #5 Jamarcus Thomas of East Ascension, in 5:42. He then held Bacot scoreless until the third period, after Mulvihill had scored a reversal, at which point Bacot scored an escape but could not manage a winning takedown.

Stubbs stayed alive for a championship for one more match but then fell to #7 Xaviere Royere of Houston Westside. Third-seeded Rylan Fontenot of Rayne fell to Jesuit's unseeded JP Webre in Round Two, who fell to #6 Cayden Richard of Acadiana in the quarterfinals. Royere has his way with Richard 16-1 TF. In his next match the Texas junior had his way with Mulvihill also, pinning the Tiger in 0:30 to win the championship. Richard fell to Bell in the CSFs and received a forfeit from Bacot to place fifth.
