46th Ken Cole
Invitational - 145
pounds Babineaux locks-up D2 #1 seed with second win over Compton |
April 14th, 2023 | Written by: Staff writer |
TC's Brandt Babineaux's only two losses of the season came from Brother Martin's
Kent Burandt in a dual meet and in the LACL finals. He had won four
tournaments prior to the LACL, and in the LACL he defeated North Desoto freshman
Dalton Compton 3-1. Prior to that loss Dalton had only lost to one
Louisiana wrestler. That was Brother Martin's Ty Duncan, who defeated
Compton 11-3 MD and 4-0 in the Cinco Ranch Big 12 in mid-November. That
was at 138 lbs., though, and Compton moved up to 145 lbs. in late December,
possibly to give 138 lbs. to his elder brother Dylan, a junior. After the
LACL Babineaux loss Compton won four matches, including ones over Rummel's
Austen Shook, Zachary's Chase Rose and De la Salle's Liam O'Connor to
place third. He had a much harder time against Shook than he did at the
LACL, in which he won 12-4 MD. This time the score was 7-5. In the
semifinals he was ahead of Southside's #3 Ian Theriot 10-0 before scoring a fall
early in the second period.
Babineaux's toughest match until the finals was against a North Desoto non-scorer, Toby McCleod. The TC sophomore was ahead 10-0 when he finally scored a fall in 5:56. He cruised into the finals after two more fast pins.
In the finals Compton scored first via an escape in the second period, but Babineaux tied the match 1-1 after a little over a minute remained, and with 30 seconds left took a two-point lead with a takedown. Compton narrowed the margin to one-point with an escape with 12 seconds later, and he tied the match when Babineaux, who had been cautioned for stalling with 14 seconds remaining, was called again, giving Compton his tying point with three seconds remaining. Babineaux, however, scored the SV takedown after 28 seconds had gone by, virtually sealing his #1 seeding for the state championships.
After losing to Compton Shook won his next four matches and placed third over the #3 Theriot. Fourth-seeded Preston Curtis of John Curtis placed fifth with a 12-6 decision over #8 Lane Turnley of Kaplan, who defeated Parkway's Peyton Plunket prior to his loss to Theriot.
