LACL a "wake-up call" for Schexnaydre

Spartan senior Jacob Schexnaydre lost his first match of the season to Catholic's defending state champion Thomas Domangue. He did not lose again in the next 10 weeks until the LACL, in which he fell to Airline's Danon Walker (as did everyone else) and then to Baton Rouge's Adam Landry, whom he had defeated twice earlier in the season. In that 10 weeks Schexnaydre won seven tournament tiles. John Curtis sophomore Anthony "AJ" Smith had not lost in 22 matches since he started in mid-December, and he won two tournaments, but he did not face the caliber of competition that Schexnaydre did, and Smith was seeded second behind the East Ascension senior.

Schexnaydre pinned his way into the finals and Smith got there via three falls and a 14-7 decision. Schexnaydre stayed in form as he took a 4-0 lead into the second period, started the second period on top, and pinned Smith in 3:00.

John Wayne Prejean, III, seeded fourth, defeated #6 Ledgerick Collins of Carencro 3-2 to place third. Unseeded Will York of Episcopal faced #5 Logan Alger of Rayne for fifth. As if not being seeded did not make things hard enough, in the first period York fell victim to a Janet Jackson-like 2004 Super Bowl "wardrobe malfunction" when a singlet strap broke. To the rescue came 220 lbs. finalist James Baldwin of Dunham, who let York use one of his singlets for the remainder of the match, which York won in 2:33.
