Sophomore Crusader Clementi is halfway there |
LHSAA State Wrestling Tournament |
Division I - 132 Pounds |
August 20th, 2023| Written by: Staff Writer |
Brother Martin sophomore Richie Clementi is halfway toward accomplishing what Ernie Perry, III did in the previous match - becoming a four-time Division I state champion without losing to a Louisiana wrestler. Should he succeed, he would be the third Brother Martin wrestler, behind Paul Klein (2015) and Stephen Shields (2017) to win four consecutive titles. Clementi was challenged a bit in this event, unlike in 2022 when he quickly pinned all of his opponents and was only pushed into the second round in the finals. This time, after falls in 1:01 and 0:21, Chalmette's #8 Mohammed Gaber took him into the third period in the quarterfinals, and #4 Lucas Maneckshaw of East Ascension took the Crusader the full six minutes in a 12-2 MD semifinals match. Clementi got back on track with a finals fall in 1:11.
Kudos in this weight class go to Jesuit senior Chase Haydel. Granted, no one particular Jesuit wrestler can take credit for the Blue Jays winning the championship, but Haydel's effort is noteworthy. Seeded sixth, he got past Acadiana sophomore Cayden "If you want to be sure about winning you better kill me, but legally" Richard, 11-6 in the first round. In his second match he teched Benton Mohammed Jamhour 17-2. In the quarterfinals he faced Holy Cross' third seed Nicholas Sauerwin. Haydel handled Sauerwin 8-4, but he had previously handled the Tiger junior 8-4, 10-1 MD and 9-4. Sauerwin beat Lucas Maneckshaw twice, and Maneckshaw beat Haydel twice, and - I do not know - seeding is as seeding goes, nobody asks me. Haydel fell to Catholic's Christian Worley in the semifinals but then defeated #5 Colin Cusimano of St. Paul in the CSFs. Haydel accepted a medical forfeit from Sauerwin to place third,
NOTE: Really, people? Two kids in the same weight class named Mohammed Jamhour (AIR) and Mohammad Jamhour (BNT)? At least they were on different sides of the bracket.
