It did not take long for De la Salle to get another two-time state champion.
Shane Barbarin did that at 120 lbs., even though he started the season at 138
lbs. At 138 lbs. he placed third at the Warrior Open and fourth at the
Lakeshore Open. At 132 lbs. he placed third at the Trygg Memorial, and at
126 lbs. he was the runner-up at the Trey Culotta. Barbarin dropped to 120
lbs. for the Louisiana Classic and beat defending Division II state champion
Brennan Romero (D2 2nd) 5-3. But Catholic's defending Division I state
champion Watts Goodson (D1 2nd) knocked him out just before the placing matches.
A week later he won the Titan Invitational.
His finals opponent was St. Louis senior Luke Caballero. Caballero won
a state championship in 2021 and was a runner-up in 2022. Caballero was
seeded third to Evangel's Jeremiah Yearby, who defeated Caballero 25-12 MD at
the Jimmy Vidrine. Caballero won the Rayne Invitational and the Jesse
James Southwest Shootout, placed second at the Lakeshore Invitational and the
Jimmy Vidrine, and fourth at the Jacob McMillan. He avenged the loss to
Yearby in a 7-5 semifinals win.
In the finals Barbarin limited Caballero to five escapes whereas the Cavalier
score four takedowns and a reversal in a 10-5 win. Still, Caballero made
three trip to the Division III finals mats, and was ousted from placing as a
freshman by DeQuincy's Camden Gautreaux, who won the 2023 Division III
Outstanding Wrestler award.
