Chalmette squeaks past Shaw 42-39

The Chalmette Owls defeated the Shaw Eagles 42-39 in a dual meet on November 29th.  One can argue that the Owls only won because they received a forfeit at 144 lbs.  But that was to Mohammed Gaber, who has a 16-2 record and would probably have been favored to win if Shaw had an opponent for him.  Shaw won seven of the 13 contested matches, but all of Chalmette's victories came via falls, whereas Shaw had six falls and one regular decision.  That merits a three-point lead which was snuffed out by the six points Chalmette won via the forfeit.

Defeating Shaw, the defending Division III state champions, whom I predict will defend that championship in 2024, is a huge feather in the cap for the Owls.  (Yeah, I hate that last phrase also.)  Mohammed Gaber is 16-2 on the season.  Teammate Leeland Webb is 18-1.  The Owls are not going to win Division I, but they will have a part in determining which teams place second, third and fourth.

The Owls had six wrestlers win via falls, including Hasan Kahla, Jayden Pontecorvo, Cole Caruso, Leeland Webb, Kolton Bischoff and Derrick Bennett.  Shaw had six wrestler who pinned their opponents, including Jayden Jamison, Blake Andre, Giovani Malta, Jayden Chapman, James Nero and Brice Hanley.  Carson Dalton won for Shaw via an 11-4 decision.

[Does anyone see how my using "including" is just plain wrong?]

There were no major upsets in the 13 matches.  Two matches my have been hyped a little.  Hasan Kayla of Chalmette and Kale Muscarello of Shaw is one of them.  Muscarello won the Spartan Invitational over Cole Poore of Fontainebleau, who is having a good year.  Kayla, however, Kayla won the Lakeshore Open over Poore, and pinned Muscarello in 1:43.  Shaw's Michael Stout is having a very good season so far, but Shaw's Blake Andre, a 2023 Division 3 runner-up, took care of Stout in 2:49.

Chalmette was expected to be a strong team this season.  Defeating the 2023 Division III champions is a great start for them.
