Jesuit prevails with finals ending one-two punch at Ken Cole |
January 7th, 2024| Written by: Staff writer |
They battled for first and second place all day on Saturday
and after the semifinals Jesuit led Teurlings Catholic by three points.
By the time the finals started the score was tied at 251.5.
Jesuit took a five-point lead after a 14-6 MD finals win by Michael
Barnett. That was negated by five
points scored by Alex Rozas over Jesuit's Bodi Harris vi a 10-0 win at 120 lbs..
With the scored tied again at 256.5 the Rebels took a four-point lead
after Brandt Babineaux defeated the Blue Jays' Wyatt Mire 7-4.
That lead increased to eight points after a 165 lbs. win by the Rebels'
Braedon Simoneaux over Jesuit's Arthur Schott.
After the 165 lbs. match the Rebels had only two finalists
remaining. The Blue Jays had three.
At 175 lbs. Rebel freshman Carter Macha could have at least forced a tie
with Jesuit at the end if he won his match against Dutchtown's William Mathis.
Early in the match it was evident that this match would not end by a
regular decision. For all practicing
purposes it was a throw-and-roll fest, won by Mathis via a fall in 5:20.
That left Jesuit with three finalists and Teurlings with only one.
Jesuit's Cameron Himel has had a great season for the Blue Jays, with a
now 23-4 record (with two losses coming from teammate Jackson Calderaro), but
his finals opponent, 44-0 Jacob Clementi, had defeated him 15-5 MD last Saturday
evening. This time Clement pinned
Himel in 1:53. The Rebels still led
by eight points.
Jesuit really did not care about Himel's loss re how the
tournament would finish. They had
some pretty heavy anchors in the last two matches who were quite capable of
tying the team championship score with regular decisions. The Rebels' last
hope was in Division II runner-up Kendra James against Division I runner-up
Jackson Calderaro of Jesuit.
Calderaro played it "close to the vest" with a 2-0 lead after the first period,
which he used to judge the talent of the Rebel senior.
Calderaro judged it well and scored a fall over James in 2:53.
Jesuit was now only two points behind the Rebels, and had
they been only one, three, four or five points ahead of Jesuit, no lead can be
considered safe when one's opponent is the two-time LHSAA State champion ad
ranked in the top 10 in the nation.
That would be Jesuit Senior Spencer Lanosga, and his opponent, Gabriel Millbern
of Walker, could only last so long with the Blue Jay before getting pinned.
It took Lanosga 49 seconds to score the fall and thus scoring six more
team points. Two were used to make
up the deficit behind Teurlings Catholic.
The remaining four points were for the team championship.
