Lions and Gators blow past competition at Dutchtown

The Lady Lions of Lafayette High School and the St. Amant High School Gators boys teams ran away with the 2025 Griffin Open, held on November 22 at Dutchtown High School.

The Lady Lions of Lafayette demolished the other 18 teams competing, outscoring runner-up Prairieville 128 to 76.  East Ascension was third with 71.5 points, followed by Dutchtown (67.5) and Live Oak (64).  Willow Dixon won her third tournament in a row, and now has a record of 10-1.  The "1" came in a dual meet against St. Amant when Dixon fell to St. Amant's Mikayla Byington.  Byington won her first tournament of the year and is undefeated at 7-0.  Winning titles for the Lady Lions were Ryleigh Blanchard and Quetzicall Guevera-Tapia.  Nineteen teams participated.

The St. Amant Gators ran away with the boys team championship, scoring 203 points.  Dutchtown finished second with 174 points, followed by Holy Cross (134), East Ascension (130) and Walker (108).  Twenty-three teams competed.  Thomas Abington and Kent Pearson won titles for the Gators.  Third-place Holy Cross had four champions out of seven Tigers entered.

Outstanding Wrestlers

Lilly Johnson of Dutchtown, with Dutchtown coach Joshua Johnson, was voted the Girls OW.  Johnson pinned all three of her opponents in the 114 lbs. weight class in times of 4:55, 3:07 and 2:49.
Live Oak's Billy Edmonston, at 215 lbs., was voted the Boys OW.  Edmonston posted victories by falls in 3:32 and 3:10, followed by a 17-2 technical fall and a 19-7 major decision in his four matches.
