St. Amant in good shape for a LPSWC Trophy

The 2025 Louisiana Public School Wrestling Championships are being held at the Lamar-Dixon EXPO Canter on December 29th and 30th, in Gonzales, Louisiana.

Only the boys were wrestling on Friday.  The girls competition will be held on Saturday.

Team Results

After Friday's wrestling was over St. Amant had a comfortable 47 point lead over Terrebonne.  One might be tempted to blame the deficit on the fact that Terrebonne only has 13 entrants while St. Amant entered a full 14-man roster.  However, if Terrebonne did have a full team, and if that 14th man made it through the quarterfinals by scoring falls in his first three matches, Terrebonne would only add 15 points to the 111 points they scored on Friday.  That still puts them 32 points behind St. Amant.  The Gators are doing something right.

**  Not seeded in the top-eight

1  Again, one can only wrestle who is there, so St. Amant gets no grief from any teams that did not have a 14-man roster.

Well, after building this table, it can be stated that St. Amant is really going to be tough to beat for the team championship.  One could put some faith in the fact that they have only one wrestler in the consolation bracket.  But that would be dumb, as the Gators have nine in the semifinals.  However, there is a small ray of sunshine for the teams challenging them.  In only two weight classes, 150 and 190, are the St. Amant wrestlers facing a lower seed than they are.  That means, if our grade-school mathematics is correct, that in the seven remaining weight classes the Gator wrestlers are seeded lower than their opponents.  One need be careful about how much emphasis is put on that, though.  In two of those seven matches, the St. Amant wrestlers defeated a higher seed than their semifinal opponent.  At 144 lbs. Athens Dufour defeated second-seed Gabriel Mentz of Mandeville.  At 285 lbs. Julian Blanchard, seeded 8th, defeated the #1 seed Jackson Norwood of Patrick Taylor.

Also, please note the fact that St. Amant scored 27 falls.  That is eight more than Terrebonne recorded.  It is a rare tournament that is not won in the consolation brackets and via bonus points.

Of the semifinal matches involving Gator wrestlers, a couple of them offer a chance to avenge a previous loss.  At 150 lbs. Thomas Abington of St. Amant pinned Gage Robinson of Lafayette in a December 3rd dual meet.  St. Amant's Julian Blanchard lost a 12-9 decision to Baton Rouge's Aiden Anderson in the quarterfinals of the Spartan Classic.

Zachary wrestlers still in the tournament include Joshua Scott (120 lbs.) and Donald Hives (165 lbs.).

Both wrestlers have made it to the fifth consolation rounds.  One more win and they are guaranteed at least sixth place.

(They get their photos published because I found them on Facebook!)

Teams Predictions

The Powers That Be over here, which would be myself and Bastet, my "Moral Support Kitty," think St. Amant put up enough points on Friday to have to work hard to lose the team race.  We would bet on two Gators making the finals, and, if that is all, the ones who do not advance are guaranteed bonus points as they will, at the very least, take sixth place.

The race to look for is for the team runner-up spot.  Terrebonne, with four semifinalists and four still alive in the consolation bracket, look like a good choice.  None of their semifinalists are expected to advance to the finals, though.  That means, though, that the Tigers will have eight in the consolation bracket.

The girls championships will be wrestled on Tuesday, December 30th.  Lafayette High School may need to build a trophy room.  The Lady Lions have won the Brusly 8ish, the Griffin Open, the Spartan Classic, the Pink Panther Invitational, the Jacob McMillan and the Ronnie Suarez SPOT District events.  Baton Rouge and Chalmette should vie for the runner-up trophy.
