Jesuit 32-Brother Martin 32
Jesuit wins by criteria "(a) The team whose opposing wrestlers or team personnel has been penalized the greater number of team points for flagrant misconduct or unsportsmanlike conduct shall be declared the winner." (I am not sure of what that means.)
One could not ask for anything better than a 32-32 tie. Each team won seven matches. Brother Martin scored 12 bonus points. Jesuit scored 11. Yet the Crusaders were deducted a point for a coach's misconduct. That led not only to a tie, but gave Jesuit the criteria needed to be declared the winner.
This match, however, as circumstances later dictated, was decided at 113 lbs. A Sudden Victory takedown by Jesuit junior Shane Roddy earned Roddy an 8-5 win over Brother Martin junior Dan Crowley, and the associated three points for a decision. Had Brother Martin won that match the misconduct penalty would not have mattered and the Crusaders would have won.
For those of you like me, who did not look hard enough at where the Crusader first team was on January 2nd and 3rd, it appears that the Crusaders have planted their flags regarding in which weight classes they will compete for the remainder of the season. The undefeated (in Louisiana) William Fontenot has placed his flag at 106 lbs. Jagger Martinez has moved down to 120 lbs., and nobody is going to like that weight class as Michael Barnett has planted his flag there. Scott Cascio has moved down to 126 lbs., and he looked really good. He faced Jesuit's Max Belsome, whom he defeated 10-3 in the 2025 LHSAA State Wrestling Championship 120 lbs. finals, and this time he prevailed by a 12-3 MD. It might be interesting to see what Fontainebleau's Braden Sellers does now. At 132 lbs. he defeated Cascio twice in December, 17-12 and 3-2. However, he fell to Belsome 6-2 in mid-November. Sellers may be just fine at 132 lbs.
Nobody, meaning myself, my cat, my mother and my daughter, knew anything about some freshman Brother Martin kid named Logan Lopez. Evidently he, like Martinez and Cascio, came over from St. Paul, where he was Cascio's workout partner and posted a record of 15-12. He got better. A lot better. After Wednesday evening he was 15-2 with his losses coming from Holy Cross' Anthony Oubre, who needs no introduction here, and Covington's Caden Myers. Myers has 30 wins so far this season, against four losses. Those four include Catholic's defending 2025 runner-up Mark Evans and defending 2025 state champion Ozias Gray of Acadiana. My point is that I, undoubtedly, have never heard of the kid, but he is very, very good. Hence, a loss to the junior Myers is not a season-wrecker for Lopez.
Keith Hodge would be in "The Undefeated" list save for a sole Louisiana loss to William Jewell of Teurlings Catholic. And the defending 2025 runner-up, Quinn McDermott, needs no introduction. In 2024 he placed sixth as a sophomore. As a freshman in 2023 he had to fill some very big shoes in replacing the injured Jacob Elsensohn, and he scored eight team points.
The Crescent City Sports commentators, Patrick Fitzsimmons and Will LaFranca, noted early in the broadcast that Brother Martin was usually the stronger team in the lower weight classes while Jesuit dominated the heavier weight classes. They were very correct. After the first seven matches the Crusaders had five wins vs. two losses. They led the dual meet 22-9. From 150 lbs. to 285 lbs., it was the Blue Jays' time to shine. They won five matches, four by technical falls and one via a decision. The Crusaders managed a technical fall and a fall.
Christopher Stricker started the comeback with a 17-0 TF. Brother Martin's Josh Lara replied in kind with a 15-0 TF. It was good to see Lara back on the mat. He was injured in the first match of the season at the Warrior Open. He did not compete again until the Duals Championships of January 2nd and 3rd, in which he wen 4-1.
Isaac Orillion posted an 18-2 TF, but Salvatore Caserta of the Crusaders bested that with a fall. The Crusaders were now ahead 33-19. The Jays could not afford another loss, and had to score at least 14 more points in the last three matches to garner a tie.
Quinn Anderson and Connor Vargas gave Jesuit a chance with 18-3 and 19-3 technical falls, to lead 33-29. That meant it was up do William Berry to score at least a major decision for a tie. At first it looked as if Berry would do that easily as he scored a takedown off of the first whistle. The Blue Jay senior put Gerard Adam in danger, but the Crusader junior was able to extricate himself out of danger. Berry continued to dominate the period and looked as if a major decision was likely for the first minute of the second period. Then football kicked in. As in "I recently finished playing football for the Blue Jays and that means I am not even close to being in shape for a six-minute match." Berry got a tad sloppy and at least twice tried a few throws which, almost but did not, end with Berry putting himself on his back. Just getting a win now looked like the best thing Berry could do, and that would leave the Blue Jays a point behind the Crusaders.
"But then something happened the ring did not intend."
A Brother Martin coach objected to something re the scoring of the match. Another coach had already been warned for misconduct, and officials hate that, don't they precious? The Crusaders were docked a team penalty point. Jesuit head coach Jonathan Orillion started thinking about criteria, at that point. Berry might not have known his name by that point, but he knew how to not jeopardize his lead, and the match ended 14-10. The match ended in a 32-32 tie, and then criteria gave the Blue Jays the win.

The updated list of The Undefeated follows:
Ladies
|
* A loss to Mikayla Byington is treated like a loss to Alex Rozas for the gentleman. That means I do not count it as a loss. It is more like a painful lesson.
Gentlemen
|
* Loss to Alex Rozas, which we do not count here.
** Mesloh and Caleb Preece of Rosepine only had one loss apiece, to each other. So I cancelled those losses out. Now, however, Preece has two more losses. They were not the fault of Mr. Mesloh. I made the rule up about the first losses cancelling each other out, but I cannot take Mr. Mesloh off of the list due to something not in his control.
