| Friday at the Louisiana Classic |
| December 16th, 2026| Written by: Staff writer |
The 53rd Louisiana Classic wrestling tournament began Friday afternoon at the Lamar-Dixon EXPO Center in Gonzales, Louisiana. Friday was a "boys only" event. The girls 3rd Louisiana Classic begins on Sunday.
WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! THE WRITER CANNOT READ! THE GIRLS WRESTLED ON FRIDAY, AS WELL.
All we can glean after the quarterfinals is the number of seeds who were upset through the quarterfinals. The team scores count after the first day of wrestling, but it can change dramatically after the semifinals are completed and the first few consolation rounds have been completed. It is possible that a wrestler who loses his bid for a quarterfinal match can score more team points than a champion should he continue on Saturday to place third.
What can be interesting is to see how many upsets occur through the
quarterfinals. I will only list those seeded fourth and higher for this
exercise. NS means "Not Seeded in the top-eight."John Thiele"

I am writing this as the quarterfinals are taking place. But I am going to go out-on-a-limb and say Catholic will be in the lead before the semifinals start, and may very well clinch the title before the finals matches start.
Team Scores after Friday's Matches
[9:56 p.m.]
| Place | School | Points | Place | School | Points | |
| 1 | Jesuit | 168 | 6 | St. Paul | 135.5 | |
| 2 | Catholic | 164 | 7 | Teurlings Catholic | 131 | |
| 3 | Holy Cross | 158 | 8 | Rummel | 127 | |
| T-4 | Brother Martin | 152.5 | 9 | St. Amant | 118 | |
| T-4 | St. Thomas More | 152.5 | 10 | Est Ascension | 96 |
OK, fine. I went out-on-a-limb and fell out of the tree.
Re the semifinals matchups:
Jesuit has six semifinalists and is favored in one of them;
Catholic has five semifinalists and is favored in four of them;
Holy Cross has six semifinalists and is favored in two of them;
Brother Martin has three semifinalists and is favored in all of them.
Being favored in four of their six semifinals matches might make the Bears the champions before the finals start, if the non-favored semifinalists from Jesuit, Holy Cross and Brother Martin all do what is expected by the seeding committee (i.e., lose).
However, like almost all tournaments do, the winning points will be scored in the consolation rounds re advancement points and bonus points scored.
