Forgive me please, for I cannot even contemplate doing what I did for Division I.

The Lady Lions of Lafayette are ahead after Friday's wrestling was completed.  That should startle none of you.  Nor should Basile leading in Division III by 13 points.

Division II is very interesting.  Six points separate the third-place Teurlings Catholic Rebels and the first-place North Desoto Griffins.  This will be fun to watch on Saturday.

Division I

With apologies, most of the events I saw this season were populated with Division I wrestlers.  In fact, I spent about three hours trying to see if there was a way for Holy Cross to defeat Catholic.  At the Louisiana Classic, I found that if placements were adjusted by taking out the out-of-state and Division II and Division III wrestlers, I found I could justify Holy Cross winning by a mere point.  I thought I found a way.  Doing that meant a lot of information on little notebook pages.  I took a break and promptly forgot how I arrived at that conclusion.  That did not work out so well.  I determined State team points if every contender did exactly what the seeding committee expected them to do.  They did fairly well as I made all of them win by falls.  That put Catholic at 231 points and Holy Cross 222 points.  Frankly, I think my predictions were flawed as I...well...I just stopped.

Good thing though!  None of the schools are behaving as I expected.  As for being in the lead after the first day, I think very few would have guessed Brother Martin.  But they are 1.5 points ahead of Holy Cross.  Catholic is third with 140 points, followed by Jesuit and St. Paul.

The Crusaders have more semifinalists than anyone else at seven, but they are only favored in three of those matches.  Holy Cross has six semifinalists but four of those matches favor the Tigers.  Holy Cross has six semifinalists and are favored in four of them.  Catholic and Jesuit are favored in four matches out of five semifinalists.

Semifinals Breakdown

School Total Favored Underdog
Brother Martin 8 3 5
Catholic 5 4
Holy Cross 6 4
Jesuit 5 4 1
St. Paul  5

The Bears were the favored team throughout the year, particularly after winning the LA Duals State Championships and the Louisiana Classic.  But it seems that neither Holy Cross nor Brother Martin got a copy of that memo.
