Weight Class Synopsis

Nothing stopped him last season and it just does not look like anything will get in his way this season either.  "Him," of course, being Airline's Ernie Perry, who won this tournament in 2020 as a freshman and was the top-seed in this year's event.  Perry scored three falls to advance to the finals.  Most people were expecting to see if perhaps Brother Martin's Mason Elsensohn might be the one to test Perry in the finals.  Elsensohn was 21-0 and had defeated the third seed, Ethan Boudreaux, 13-6 on December 30th.  Boudreaux, however, had other ideas, and two reversals beats an escape and a takedown every time, which is how Boudreaux prevailed over Elsensohn in the semifinals.

State Implications

Division I: Perry and Elsensohn will be seeded first and second.  The third spot may go to Parkway's David Viers.  A third-place finisher last season, Viers was seeded eighth in this event but manage to place fifth, losing to Perry and Elsensohn, and defeated fourth-seeded Trey Faherty of St. Paul.  Faherty only had three matches under his belt before this event, but after his loss to Perry he was pinned by unseeded Nicholas McClendon and then Viers to place sixth.

Division II: Boudreaux will be seeded first in Division II, followed by McClendon, who beat the probable third-seed Haden Tassin of Shaw.  Daylon Dugas may be the fourth-seed as he was also in this event but did not advance as far as Tassin.

Division III: Only two Division III contestants were entered into this event, and neither won a match so Division III seeding implications are not viable re the results of this event.

Finals

Ernie Perry, III defeated Ethan Boudreaux of Teurlings Catholic in a 12-4 MD. Perry scored at will in the first two periods to build an 8-0 lead.  In the third period Perry scored two escapes, the two traded takedowns and Boudreaux ended the scoring with a reversal.
