Weight Class Synopsis
Sulphur's Corey Hyatt's freshman season came to end in a 5-4 loss to
Catholic's Macullen Mire in the round just before the 2020 state tournament
placement matches. He had dominated the first two consolation matches
after losing in Round-two to eventual champion Jarin Meyer of Baton Rouge.
As a sophomore, losing was not an issue. Hyatt's closest of his 12
matches this season was a 7-4 win over North Desoto's defending Division II
state champion Dylan Olivier. Parkway's Jaden Jones lost to Hyatt by seven
points (twice) as did Brother Martin's Julian Tapia. Everyone else Hyatt
faced succumbed to a fall and only one, Live Oak's Nawab Singh, forced Hyatt
into a third period. That was in the Louisiana Classic finals, and Singh
and Hyatt were destined to meet again in the Division I finals. Hyatt's
toughest match was his one with Tapia, whereas Singh had a more difficult time
with third-seeded Joshua Sabadie of St. Paul in a 7-3 semifinals win.
The top six seeds each placed, although #3 Sabadie, #4 Jermaine Vessell of
Catholic and #6 Cameron Walker of Zachary took unexpected spots on the podium.
That was Walker's fault as he won an 18-9 Major Decision over Vessell in the
consolation semifinals and then upset Sabadie 3-2 to place third.
Vessell's bad luck continued as he fell to #5 Gavyn O'Connor of Holy Cross in
the match for fifth.
