Weight Class Synopsis | Quarterfinals | Semifinals | 3rd and 5th | Finals |
Final records include Louisiana losses but all wins
Shaw's Ashton Surrency was seeded third in 2018, his freshman year. He finished fifth, losing to the 2019 Division II champion Clayton Hill of Live Oak and to the 2020 Division I state champion Joshua Keeler of Parkway. In 2019 Surrency was the top-seed but finished third after losing to 2019 Division II state champion Colten Sonnier of Teurlings Catholic. Surrency was again seeded first in 2020 but fell in the finals to Carencro's Tyrick Clay, whom Surrency defeated for third place a year earlier.
For three consecutive years the Shaw wrestler, and younger brother of Shaw coach Brandon Surrency, who won a Division II state championship in 2009, had yet to finish as predicted by the seeding committee. In 2021 he was not about to start.
Surrency was seeded second to defending Division II state champion Ryder Hawley of Rayne. Hawley was 16-1 and won the North Vermillion 6, the Jacob McMillan Memorial and the Acadiana Inferno. He had wins over Logan Smith of Teurlings Catholic, Jackson Ballay of Jesuit and Nicholas DiGeralamo of Holy Cross. His two losses were at the Louisiana Classic. Seeded fourth at 145 lbs. he lost his first-round match to De la Salle's Spencer Hughes 6-4. Later, in the consolation quarterfinals, he avenged that loss by pinning Hughes in 4:00. He lost 8-4 to Brother Martin's Quinn Williams (3rd in Division I) before defeating a tough Voltaire Sanders of Zachary (6th in Division I) via a fall in 3:09 to place fifth.
Surrency was 10-1 upon entering the state championships. His only real mar, and his other technical ones, occurred at the Louisiana Classic. Surrency was undefeated and seeded second to Jacob Frost of Holy Cross. Seeded third was Rummel's Jacob Ramirez. Ramirez might have been seeded second if not for a loss, at 160 lbs., to defending Division I state champion Peyton Ward of St. Paul. Regardless the two met in the semifinals but Surrency sustained an injury in the second period and had to withdraw. That cost him two forfeits in the consolation rounds, and forfeits are counted when seeding a state tournament. Surrency did not have any tournament titles this season but he did have wins over Live Oak's Jordan Griffin (seeded 4th in Division I), Chase Scott of Brother Martin (3rd in Division I in 2020) and an impressive 16-2 major decision over Sean Cripple of St. Paul (2021 Division I runner-up).
Surrency spent almost nine minutes to reach the finals after a 9-3 decision and a fall in 2:49. In three matches, Hawley took 3:35 to advance to his second Division II finals mat.
Senior Jaxson Trosclair of Teurlings Catholic and Rummel sophomore Austen
Shook placed third and fourth, as they were seeded. Two more sophomores,
fifth-seed Aiden Carinio of Benton and unseeded Daniel Trosclair of North
Desoto, filled-up the last two spots on the podium. The sophomore Olivier
earned his spot on the podium by knocking-off sixth-seeded Mark Latusa of
Lakeshore in 2:35.
