Weight Class Synopsis

Junior John Paul Travasos of Teurlings Catholic placed third at the Jacob McMillan Memorial, fifth at the Louisiana Classic and lost a dual meet match.  His losses all came to Division I opponents who placed second and third or (twice)  was seeded fourth but had a disappointing time, at the state championships.

Hunter Hanson of North Desoto lost to two of the same individuals, Rocco Horvath of Brother Martin and Ramos Santos of East Ascension, but he lost to Catholic’s Michael Price in the LACL prior to the placement matches.  Travasos defeated Price to place fifth, and thus was seeded higher.

Travasos and Hanson were by far the “heavy hitters” in the weight class.  And Travasos did not have to wrestle Saturday until the finals, as his semifinals opponent, fourth-seeded Alejandro Canas of Lakeshore, was unable to compete on Saturday.

A non-seeded “non-heavy hitter” was Shaw junior Zalen Wilson.  Wilson upended fourth-seed Matthew Kirkpatrick of Rummel 9-4 in Round-one and then pinned #6 Maximus Bonner of Carencro to make the semifinals.  Wilson fell to Hanson in that round on Saturday, and his next two matches were repeats of Friday matches.  In the consolation semifinals he defeated Kirkpatrick again, this time via a fall in 4:29, and then he defeated Bonner 9-4 to place third.  Kirkpatrick took fifth via a forfeit by Canas.

Finals

Top seeded John Paul Travasos of Teurlings Catholic won the fourth Rebel championship of the evening via an 8-4 decision over North Desoto's Hunter Hanson

Travasos dominated the finals match, scoring three takedowns and a reversal against only four escapes by Hanson.  The first period takedown came from the  defense of a Hanson shot.  Near the end of the second period Travasos turned into Hanson and grabbed one of Hanson’s legs.  Hanson tried to maintain control from the side, but ended-up riding high, and when he could not force a stalemate and Travasos got deeper on his leg, he was forced to cede the reversal.  The two went out-of-bounds with 18 second remaining, and Hanson was finally able to score an escape with five second remaining.

In the third period Hanson scored another escape, making the score 4-2 in favor of Travasos.  Travasos again scored a takedown via defending a Hanson shot to take a 6-3 lead.  With five second remaining Hanson missed a throw, virtually giving Travasos another two points, and the Travasos let Hanson go as the match ended, allowing Hanson to score his fourth escape.
