Weight Class Synopsis

Jude Monaco of Shaw was 12-0 and the Louisiana Classic Champion.  North Desoto’s Andrew Gonzales was 12-3 and placed fourth at the LACL.  Gonzales’ losses were to East Ascension’s Brad Mahoney, Mark Pennison of Hannan and Kade Moran of Baton Rouge.  Monaco did not wrestle any of the opponents to whom Gonzales lost, but he defeated the 2020 Division I runner-up Blain Cascio twice.  Most kids go down a weight class because they feel stronger against lighter opponents.  Hence, Monaco winning the LACL at 182 lbs. should not have placed him below one who placed fourth at 170 lbs.  There is usually a large talent gap between winners and fourth-placers at such an event.  The seeding committee did not see it that way.  Monaco would set them straight, though.

Gonzales reached the finals via fall in 0:37, 3:54 and a 14-5 Major Decision.  Monaco used falls in 0:59, 0:21 and a 150 Technical Fall.

Only fourth-seeded Michael Davis of North Vermillion did not make it to the podium.  He was upset in the quarterfinals by fifth-seeded David George of Rayne, and then in the consolation quarterfinals by eighth see Sherell Manuel of Belle Chasse.  Manuel and George were seniors, though, and may have felt more pressure than the sophomore Davis who has two years left.

George topped third seed Hezekiah Chatelain of Lakeshore to reach the consolation finals, in which he defeated Manuel in 2:03.  Manuel had defeated sixth-seeded Zach Watkins, who came back to defeat Chatelain for fifth.

Finals

Second-seeded Jude Monaco of Shaw kept his perfect record on track with a fall in 4:51 over top-seeded Andrew Gonzaled of North Desoto   Monaco dominated the finals match.  He scored five points in the first period, four in the second and two in the third, posting an 11-0 lead prior to pinning Gonzales in 4:51.
