Weight Class Synopsis
The two highest seeded wrestlers in this bracket, #1
Charlie Yocum of Haughton and #2 Logan Ferguson of North Desoto had a combined
record of 0-0. (TW has Haughton’s
Charlie Yocum at 1-0 but that was due to a forfeit.)
Reid Bergeron of Teurlings Catholic was one match away from placing in
the Jacob McMillan Memorial and the Louisiana Classic.
Of his four losses, two came from Division I third-place winner Austin
Reason of Central, one to Division I quarterfinalist Christian James of Airline
and one to Division III terror Shad Sheffie of St. Michael.
In Division II Bourgeois was 7-0, but that seemed not to matter.
Fifth-seeded Rayne junior Garrett Louviere had enough match
experience to get past the fourth seed, Bryan Leite of NOMMA in the
quarterfinals and then to squeak by Yocom 11-10 in the semifinals.
He would meet Bourgeois in the finals after the Rebel beat Ferguson 9-6.
Brandon Pierre of Lakeshore may have had the best
tournament, beating seventh-seed Neil Borne of Rummel in the first round, losing
to Ferguson in the quarterfinals, but then winning three successive matches,
including an 11-9 one against Yocom in the consolation semifinals.
He ended up fourth, losing to Ferguson in 1:33, but that is an impressive
finish for one who started out not being seeded at all.
Borne and Yocom met in the match for fifth, and as Yocom
was taking control of the match something happened to cause Yocom to be pulled
away from Borne and assessed a penalty point for unsportsmanlike conduct.
He had just erased a 2-0 deficit to take a 5-2 lead, which became 5-3
after the penalty point, but after eight minutes of discussion, which involved
consulting head official Jerry Schmidt, it was determined that Yocom’s conduct
necessitated a disqualification.
From the discussion of the table workers Yocom may have reacted to something
Borne did that did not meet Yocom’s approval.
After losing his last two matches by scores of 11-10 and 11-9, Yocom took
the DQ well. He might not have cared
that much anymore. But he is a
junior and should be able to come back fine in the 2021-22 season.
And Borne is only a sophomore, so he has plenty of room for more
experience.
