Weight Class Synopsis

Erath sophomore Wiley Boudreaux entered the state championships with a 9-2 record.  His losses were to Brother Martin's Ethan Castex and North Desoto's Cameron Davis, wrestlers who would place second in Division I and win Division II, respectively.  He did not wrestle any Division III opponents but was 2-1 against Division II wrestlers and 7-1 against Division I competition.  He placed fourth at the Louisiana Classic, an event in which he went 6-2.  One of those wins was over Sulphur's Kyle Thibodeaux.

Andre Johnson of Basile was seeded second to Boudreaux due to a loss to Thibodeaux.  Johnson won the Brusly Invitational and the Acadiana Inferno and placed second at the Jacob McMillan Memorial.  He was 1-1 versus Church Point's Timothy Routon, but his win was at a tournament and counted more re seeding than Routon's win, which was at a dual meet.  Treyrton Schexnaider of Kaplan had lost to Routon, which put him as the fourth seed.

How De la Salle junior Collin Veron was seeded only fifth is baffling.  He had three losses.  One was in the Trey Culotta Invitational finals to Castex.  Another was to Thibodeaux, which explains why Veron was not seeded higher than Johnson.  To be seeded lower than Routon and Schexnaider makes no sense.  Neither Routon nor Schexnaider competed against the quality of competition that Veron faced, which included wins over Rummel's Division II runner-up Carter Burgess and Live Oak's Andrew Lusby.  Veron should have been seeded third and given a chance to meet Boudreaux in the finals.  As it was, Veron pushed Boudreaux harder than anyone else did, losing only 9-6, and he was ahead 4-2 entering the third period of that semifinals match.

Johnson won the third match with Routon to break the 1-1 season tie.

Finals

Top-seeded Wiley Boudreaux won Erath's first state championship with a fall over second seed Andre Johnson of Basile in 1:05.  Boudreaux was also voted the Division III Outstanding Wrestler

This match consisted of a double-leg takedown by Erath followed by a ball-and-chain half-nelson which almost worked but ended with Johnson standing up and turning to face Boudreaux.  Boudreaux, though, anticipated that and dropped down to catch a bear hug around Johnson's waist.  He used that to squeeze Johnson down to the mat straight to his back  for Boudreaux to score the fall.
