Weight Class Synopsis

By December 5th Marc Martinez of Brusly had amassed a 15-0 record which included wins over Jaden Shirley of St. Amant (9-7 SV) and Happy Butler of Catholic (fall in 1:03).  In fact, he had not wrestled a Division III opponent.  He was definitely seeded in the right place.

So was De la Salle junior Spencer Hughes.  Hughes had upset defending Division II state champion Ryder Hawley in the first round of the Louisiana Classic, and placed third at the Brusly Invitational, fourth at the Spartan Invitational and eighth at the Trey Culotta Invitational.  His one loss in Division III was to Basile’s Ethan Langley, but Langley injured himself on January 16th and was unable to participate in the state championships.

The rest of the top-six seeds were fine, even though the wrestlers might have thought otherwise.  Sixth-seeded Hector Barraza of St. Michael lost to #3 Alexzander Zaunbrecher of Church Point via a 4:27 pin in the quarterfinals, but he worked his way back to a rematch with Zaunbrecher in the consolation finals.  In doing so he defeated third seed Parker Fontenot of Basile 6-5, avenging a loss to Fontenot at the Jacob McMillan Memorial.  That pitted Zaunbrecher against fifth-seeded Thomas Bean of Evangel for the second time in the tournament.  Fontenot won the first match via an 18-4 Major Decision and won the last one via a 17-1 Technical Fall.

Top-seeded Marc Martinez of Brusly pinned second seed Spencer Hughes of De la Salle in 3:02

Martinez dominated Hughes in the finals.  He scored 11 points in the first period via a takedown followed by a trio of three-point nearfalls.  Hughes felt a throw was the only way to get back into the match, so he chose to start the second period standing.  To no avail, though, as Martinez took him down in 18 seconds and used a bar-arm half-nelson to score a fall in 3:02.
