Finalists: Conor Karwath (East Ascension) vs.
Jovonte Wheeler (Brusly)
In an all-Louisiana final,
East Ascension's Conor Karwath demonstrated why he is considered by many
to be the favorite in the 285 pound weight class come February.
Karwath pinned all of his opponents in the pool matches on Friday.
But Karwath was not alone. Brusly junior Jo'Vonte Wheeler also
pinned his pool opponents, and hence the two Louisiana combatants were
seeded #1 and #2 in Saturday's championship.
The finals match was a low scoring affair for much of the time. At
the end of the first period neither wrestler had scored. But in the next
two-and-a-half minutes Karwath came alive, reversing Wheeler with
Peterson rolls, controlling him with a leg ride and scoring nearfall
points en route to an 8-0 lead before finally wearing out the Panther
wrestler. Karwath ended the match with a fall at 4:35. |
