2013 South Walton Border Wars Championships
Date: Wednesday, November 19th, 2013
1st Annual South Walton "Border Wars" Wrestling Tournament
- 2013
Brusly runs away with team title; Clay, FL takes runner-up spot; St. Paul takes third.
Jimmy Bible's Brusly Panthers left little doubt
that they are the team to beat in Louisiana's Division III state
championships, and that they should factor prominently in other
tournaments as well as duals meets in any division this season.
Led by two defending state champions and a 2012 state champion, the
Panthers had clinched the team title before the finals started, and put
seven wrestlers in the finals. Brusly had finalists from 120
pounds through 145 pounds, at 195 pounds and 285 pounds. Three
Brusly wrestlers were crowned champions, albeit not necessarily the ones
most expected to be. Freshman Kendon Lee-Keyser won the first Brusly finals match at 126 pounds. He was also voted the Outstanding Wrestler of the lower weight classes. Noah Landry followed suit at 138 pounds, as did Dillon Prejean at 195 pounds. In addition to assistant coaches Barrett Wilson and Rodney Sutherland, Brusly brought numerous parents and fans to the event. And to add a little Cajun flair a generous helping of boudin made its way, if only for a brief while, to the coaches hospitality room. |
Clay High School of Jacksonville, Florida took the runner-up title and had a champion in Adam Breindel at 145 pounds. Host South Walton placed 15th and had a champion in freshman William Pickren at 106 pounds.
Three freshmen found themselves with championships. South Walton's William Pickren was the first to do so at 106 pounds. Two matches later it was Richie McClanahan of Arnold at 120 pounds, followed by Brusly's Kendon Lee-Keyser at 126 pounds. Prior to the tournament Pickren was ranked 7th in Florida 1A, McClanahan was ranked 4th in Florida 1A, and Lee-Keyser was ranked 2nd in Louisiana Division III (@ 120 pounds).
