Division I

Season Synopsis

In Division I the 106 lbs. weight class was dominated by two wrestlers.  Another got close but was not able to break into the winner's circle against the others.

Brody Martin of Jesuit finished fifth at 106 pounds in 2014.  Blake Mateu of Rummel was in 8th grade and did not wrestle in the 2014 state championships.  Holy Cross' Chris Zea placed third in 2014 and may have been a favorite in the weight class at the beginning of the season.  The Jesuit senior and Rummel freshman, however, showed early that they were the ones to beat to advance to the state finals.

Martin got past Mateau first in the semifinals of the Warrior Open (won by Martin).  Almost a month later Mateu returned the favor, defeating Martin in the semifinals of the South Walton Border Wars in Destin, Florida (won by Mateu).  At the Deep South Bayou Duals, Martin regained his place as the top seed at the upcoming Louisiana Classic, but then promptly lost it a few hours later during a second DSBD match between Jesuit and Rummel.  Unfortunately for the young Raider, that would be the last time he would defeat the seasoned Blue Jay senior.  Martin defeated Mateu in the finals of the Louisiana Classic and the two would not meet again until the state finals.

Chris Zea had a very respectable season.  He placed second to Martin at Mandeville, third at the Louisiana Classic (behind Martin and Mateu) and 1st in the Greater New Orleans Championships.  In fact, his only losses to Louisiana wrestlers prior to the state tournament were to Martin (four times) and Mateu (once during a Rummel vs. Holy Cross dual meet).

Preliminary Rounds

All eight top seeds advanced to the quarterfinals.

Clay Celli of Byrd defeated Greyson Pellegrin of Mandeville in 1:05 in Round 1

Finals

(1) Brody Martin (JES) defeated (2) Blake Mateu (RUM) 1-0
In a very odd contest for a couple of 106 lbs. wrestlers, only one point was scored in the entire match.  The first round was scoreless, as was the second when Mateu rode Martin for the entire two minutes.  In the third period, however, with less than a minute remaining and Martin on top, Mateu was assessed a stalling penalty, giving Martin a 1-0 lead.  Martin maintained his position on top until time ran out and became the first Division I state champion of the season.  Martin finished the season 42-2 against Louisiana wrestlers and 42-6 against all competition.  Mateu was 45-4 and 45-5.

Division II

Season Synopsis

As a sophomore Central's Austin Gouedy finished second to Live Oak's Colt Olinde in 2014, but while Olinde moved up this season, Gouedy remained at 106 lbs.  Against Division II and Division III competition he was undefeated.  His only losses came to Division I's Martin, Mateu, Kiefer Fuselier of Sulphur (5th in D1 state) and Jesuit's other talented 106-pounder, Adam Larriviere.  Gouedy won the Central Wildcat Open and the Zachary Big Horse Open, placed fifth at the Louisiana Classic and third at the Ken Cole.

Gouedy's finals opponent was Teurlings Catholic junior Dane Langley.  Langley, the second seed, finished third at the Spartan Open, seventh at the Louisiana Classic, second at the Teurlings Catholic Rebel Open and sixth at the Ken Cole.

Division III

Season Synopsis

Two freshmen were matched in the Division III finals.  John Rollins was 35-12, but only one of those losses was to a Division III opponent, namely one Sam Pitts of Ouachita Christian.  Rollins' other losses came to Division I and II wrestlers including Mateu, Larriviere, Zea, Gouedy and Dane Langley.  Pitts was 26-5 against Louisiana opponents, and two of those losses (vs. one victory) were to Rollins.  Against Division III Pitts also lost a match to Kaplan's Adam Gaspard in the Rayne Invitational quarterfinals, but Pitts came back to beat Gaspard for third place.  Otherwise, aside from two out-of-state losses, Pits only lost to three Division I wrestlers.
