Division I
Season Synopsis
A runner-up last year, this season the 170 lbs. weight class belonged to Holy Cross' Brice Duhe. Duhe suffered only three losses
- one in the finals of the Las Vergas Holiday Classic (7-5), one when he went up
to 182 lbs. against Live Oak's Brody Bonura (5-3) and then one via what many
though a questionable fall in a dual meet against Rummel's Joseph Kerry.
(That match would not have mattered re the seeding at the state tournament as
Duhe had earlier defeated Kerry via a fall, an 8-0 major decision and then via
another fall in 2:55 in the finals of the Louisiana Classic. Duhe was the
obvious #1 seed in Division I after winning the Mandeville Open, the Spartan
Open, the Louisiana Classic and the Greater New Orleans championship during the
season.
The #2 seed was pretty much up for grabs until the Brother Martin-Rummel dual
meet of January 24th. This was the first meeting between Kerry and
Williams, both of whom had not lost to any other Louisiana wrestlers aside from
Duhe (Williams lost to Duhe 15-6 in a dual meet and 8-1 in the Louisiana
Classic semifinals). In a very close match Williams prevailed 11-10.
However, these two seeding spots were pretty interchangeable as all signs
indicated a semifinals match between the #2 Williams and the #3 Kerry.
Preliminary Rounds
No upsets were recorded in the first two rounds.

Finals
(1) Brice Duhe (HC) defeated (2) Pierce
Williams (BM) 14-5 |
Duhe scored a takedown in the first 15
seconds, which was pretty indicative of how this match would be.
Williams escaped a minute later, but Duhe took him down,
recorded two nearfall points and went into the second period
with a 6-1 lead. Duhe rode Williams for most of the second
period, but with 40 seconds left Williams reversed him to cut
the lead to 6-3. Duhe, however, escaped and took Williams
down again to take a 9-3 lead into the final period. Duhe
reversed Williams early in the third period for an 11-3 lead,
but Duhe escaped and took Williams down once again, ending the
match with a 14-5 win and a fourth state championship for the
Tigers. Duhe finished the season 27-2 against Louisiana
opponents and 35-3 against all comers. Williams, who could
arguably be the most improved wrestler of the season as he did
not even compete at the 2014 state championships, finished
25-4 and 37-8. |

Division II
Season Synopsis
The seeding of this weight class was a tad confusing. Northside's
Cozinski Alfred only had two losses, falling to
defending Division II state champion Jordan White of Benton and Huntington's
The'Anthony Taylor. More interesting, however, is that one of Alfred's 13
wins before the state tournament was a 10-4 win over the #1 seed, Kynan Sonnier
of Teurlings Catholic. Aside from that loss, Sonnier had no other losses
to Division II wrestlers.
Sonnier might have received the nod as, while White defeated Alfred soundly at
the Ken Cole, Sonnier defeated White in the finals to win the tournament.
Sonnier also won the only other non-dual tournament in which both participated,
the Teurlings Rebel Open, while Alfred was forced to withdraw do to an injury.
Preliminary Rounds
No upsets were recorded in the first round.

(3) Cozinski Alfred (NS) defeated (1) Kynan
Sonnier (TC) 8-6 SV |
This match was
scoreless after the first period. Sonnier took a 2-0 lead
with a reversal in the second, but Alfred responded with one of
his own with a little less than a minute remaining. In the
third period Sonnier managed an escape and a takedown to take a
5-2 lead. Alfred responded with an escape and takedown of
his own to tie the
match at 5-5. Sonnier escaped and took a 6-5 lead with
seven seconds remaining, and another point was awarded to the
Rebel as well. After a meeting of the officials that point
was negated and given to Alfred, tying the match and sending it
to a Sudden Victory round. This time Alfred again avenged
a previous loss, giving Northside a state championship 8-6.
Later in the evening Alfred was awarded the Division II
Outstanding Wrestler award. Alfred finished the season 16-2. Sonnier was 35-7 against
Louisiana opponents and 36-9 overall. |

Division III
Season Synopsis
A third place finisher in the Division III state championships in 2014,
Brusly junior Blayze Olano lost three matches early in the season (twice to a
Division II opponent and once to one from Division I) but then won 15 of his next
19 matches, with the four losses coming from out-of-state opponents at the
Deep South Bayou Duals, and one from a Division I opponent. Olano,
however, did not compete again until the state championships, but his record
still merited a #1 seed.
Lakeside senior Thomas Lambert brought a 16-9 record into the state
championships, but all of his losses were to Division I or II opponents.
During the season Lambert won the Eagle Invitational, the Ark-La-Tex Classic and
placed third at the Airline Invitational.
Preliminary Rounds
No upsets were recorded in the first round of this bracket.

Finals
(1) Blaze Olano (BRU) defeated (2) Thomas
Lambert (LK) 3-2 |
This was a very close match and could
have gone either wrestler's way. Lambert scored the first
takedown for a 2-0 lead and at one point briefly had Olano in a
cradle, but not long enough to earn nearfall points. Olano
answered with an escape and a takedown of his own, almost
placing Lambert on his back, and was able to ride-out the senior
for a 3-2 win and another state championship for the Panthers. |
