Division I
Season Synopsis
When compared to the state championships the rest of the season must have
been a breeze for Fontainebleau's Ethan Eisenhardt. In his 34 wins
(including out-of-state competitors) he had only three matches that were not wins by
at least a major decision or a fall. He had no losses and during the
season won the Trey Culotta, went undefeated in the Huntsville, Alabama,
Battlefield Duals, won the Rayne Invitational, the Ken Cole and the St. Paul's
Invitational tournaments. He was an easy choice for the #1 seed in
Division I.
The #2 seed took a little while to get his season started on the right track.
Lafayette junior Rodrigo Diaz lost two matches in November. He did not get
a chance to avenge his first loss, a 3-1 Sudden Victory affair with Catholic's
Nicholas Cashio, but he did get even and surpass the soon-to-be Division II
state champion Nicholas Simoneaux of Live Oak. Diaz beat Simoneaux at the
Griffin Open 9-8, but Simoneaux defeated Diaz in the Spartan Open semifinals
19-13. Diaz returned the favor (with interest) at the Live Oak Duals
and at the Ken Cole. Between his loss to Simoneaux and the state
tournament Diaz did lose two matches to Hahnville's Kendrick Jones, but, then,
who didn't? Diaz did successfully defend his 2013-14 Ronnie Suarez
District 5A Tournament and Lafayette Metro Tournament titles and brought 42
victories with him to the state championships.
Brother Martin's Jacob Clapp was seeded third and Rummel's Robert Hudgins was
the #4 seed.

Finals
(1) Ethan Eisenhardt (FNT) defeated (2) Rodrigo
Diaz (LAF) 3-2 |
The first time these two met was in the
finals of the Ken Cole, a match won by Eisenhardt 3-1 in a
Sudden Victory period. This match was almost a repeat.
No points were scored in the first period. Eisenhardt
scored an escape early in the second period but neither wrestler
could score a takedown in the remainder of that period. In
the third Diaz tied the score with an escape after 20 seconds
had gone by, and it looked as though another Sudden Victory
round would be in play. But 10 seconds later Eisenhardt
broke the standoff with a double-leg takedown to take a 3-1 lead.
Diaz escaped with 54 seconds remaining to make the score 3-2,
but Eisenhardt was able, without appearing to stall, to hold on
and complete his undefeated season with a state championship for
Fontainebleau. Eisenhardt finished with a 33-0 record
against Louisiana wrestlers and a 38-0 overall record.
Diaz finished 44-7 and 45-7. |

Division II
Season Synopsis
Live Oak's Nicholas Simoneaux had a great season.
With 44 wins, his only losses to Louisiana wrestlers were all to very good
opponents, including the Division I state finalists Eisenhardt and Diaz (whom
Simoneaux also beat once), Nick Cashio of Catholic (who probably would have been
a high seed at the DI state championships but who was injured during the
Louisiana Classic), Austin Guedry of East Ascension (seeded #7 in DI at 195 lbs.
and whom Simoneaux defeated three other times) and to Brusly's Donald Johnson,
whom Simoneaux later defeated in a dual meet and at the Greater Baton Rouge
Championships finals. Aside from the GBRs Simoneaux also took home titles
from the Zachary Big Horse, the Parkway Lone Survivor and the cream of the crop
- the Louisiana Classic, in which he defeated Centreville's Brian Arnett and
Brother Martin's Jacob Clapp.
Sam Houston's Kellen Lockhart brought a 24-11 Louisiana record to the state
championships. Lockhart won
the Jesse James Southwest Shootout, avenging a December loss to Darian Mitchell
of Barbe. Lockhart, seeded second behind Simoneaux, had one thing against
him, though: Simoneaux had beaten him twice: 6-0 and via a fall in 3:00.
Pearl River's Robert McNeil was seeded third and Huntington's Kasell Fair was
seeded fourth. Those two really left the weight class a Simoneaux-Lockhart
affair, though, as McNeil at 1-2 and Fair at 0-2 exited the event early.
Preliminary Rounds
In the first round Bossier's Brandon Simpson upset #8 Lee Schwarzenbach of
Teurlings Catholic in 1:51and Rayne's Michael Gossen defeated #7 Kyser Franklin
of Riverdale in 4:28.

Quarterfinals
Belle Chasse's #6 Michael Mason upset Pearl River's #3 Robert McNeil in 3:30 to reach the
semifinals against Lockhart. McNeil had defeated Mason in 3:27 at the
Belle Chasse Duals on January 10th.

Finals
(1) Nicholas Simoneaux (LO) defeated (2) Kellen
Lockhart in 2:57 |
Lockhart started the scoring with a
takedown after a minute had passed in the first period, but in
the space of about five seconds Simoneaux escaped and took
Lockhart down with an ankle-pick to take a 3-2 lead, which is
how the period ended. In the second period Simoneaux
started on the top and stayed there, turning Lockhart to his
back with a tight-waist and a chicken-wing, and securing a fall
in 2:57 for Live Oak's third state title of the evening.
Simoneaux finished his senior year 43-11 against Louisiana
wrestlers and 4-14 against all competitors. Lockhart
finished 27-12 and 29-13. |

Division III
Season Synopsis
In 2014 Brusly's Donald Johnson was seeded first at 220 lbs. in Division III
but was upset in the semifinals and had to settle for third place. This
year Johnson was seeded #1 again, bringing 38 wins to the state tournament.
Of his 11 losses to Louisiana wrestlers all had come from prominent Division I
wrestlers the likes of Eisenhardt (FNT), Diaz (LAF) and Clapp (BM), and two to
the Division II champion Simoneaux of Live Oak. More importantly as far as
the state championships were concerned, however, he also defeated #2 seed Mason
Rabel of Dunham at the Ken Cole in 50 seconds.
Rabel had 24 wins and all of his losses were to Division I or Division II
opponents. He also had some wins over some high-quality opponents
including St. Paul's Chase Cochran, Sam Houston's Kellen Lockhart, McKinley's
Darian Jackson and the #3 seed, Kelvin McNeil, Jr. of Evangel.
Preliminary Rounds
No upsets were recorded in the first round.
