Archer 44 - Mater Dei 36 |
June 26th, 2014 | Written by: Editor |
Archer vs. Mater Dei was outstanding. The teams traded forfeits at 170 lbs. and 220 lbs. so only 13 matches were contested - but they were good. After six matches Mater Dei owned an eight point lead. Five matches later they were down by 19. A Mater Dei pin at 120 lbs. by tournament MVP Will Egli cut the deficit to 13 with three matches remaining. Things looked grim for the Wildcats early in the next match, though. Josh Clem was manhandled in the first two minutes by his Archer opponent and found himself on his back early in the second. The Mater Dei wrestlers, however, showed all weekend that they know how to counter almost every maneuver used against them. Clem seized an opportunity to roll through a head-and-arm pinning combination to reverse the scenario and put his opponent on his back for good, putting the Wildcats within seven points. A subsequent technical fall by Mater Dei put them down by only two. The last match was a brawl between Mater Dei's Blake Jourdan and Archer's Trey Rinehart, and it appeared to be heading Mater Dei's way as Jourdan put Rinehart on his back several times with throws, but he could not "settle in" and was consistently rolled over to his back. Nevertheless Jourdan started the round on the bottom and escaped to take a 14-11 lead. Then a flurry of action by both wrestlers came to an end with Jourdan again putting Rinehart on his back. But again, Rinehart rolled out of it, this time putting Jourdan wrestler on his back to score a match-winning fall with 10 seconds remaining.
