Archer 39 - Team Valley 34 |
June 26th, 2014 | Written by: Editor |
Sunday victories over Easton and Mater Dei "A" extinguished any doubts about the Archer Tigers' vulnerability due to their loss to the Oklahoma Rampage on Saturday. Their finals opponent, Team Valley, showed no indications of vulnerability all weekend, particularly not after their 38-26 domination of the Crusader "A" squad in the semifinals. Archer's strength was in the higher weights while Team Valley's was in the lower ones. If either team had an advantage it might have only been a psychological one for Archer as they would start and end the match with the brothers Bullard, both two-time Georgia 6A state champions.
Daniel Bullard started the Tigers off as expected with a pin in the first match. But that was immediately negated as Archer had to forfeit the 170 lbs. weight class. Team Valley did not stop there and added nine more points, but Archer came right back with 15 of their own with wins by state runner-up Quinn Miller, state champion Elliott Lee and at 98 lbs., Gavin Smith, who was undefeated on the weekend (as well as being a Georgia "Kids" state champion). But the lower weights in general belonged to Team Valley, whose Portillo brothers, Justin and Josh, a state champion and a state runner-up respectively, scored falls at 106 and 113 lbs. Vinny Artigues did break Team Valley's hold on the lighter weight classes briefly with a three-point decision, but Team Valley answered with one of their own plus a major decision to forge a 10 point lead, 34-24. Archer won the next two matches by a decision and a fall to bring them within one point, and then it was Thomas Bullard's time to shine. Known to at least one Florida coach to be an awesome scrambler, Bullard countered a deep single-leg shot and turned it into a takedown that led to two sets of nearfall points for a 9-0 first period lead. Bullard finished the match, and the meet, 54 seconds later to give Archer a hard-earned 2014 Jazz Town Duals championship.
