Crusader "A" 40 - Oklahoma Rampage 33 |

The Crusaders erupt after Blain Eisensohn's second round pin gave them a 40-33 quarterfinals win over the Oklahoma Rampage. |
The 3-1 Brother Martin Crusaders had little problem getting past Mater Dei's "B" squad 66-13 in Sunday's first round.
They then had to face the Oklahoma Rampage team that went 4-0 on Saturday, including their upset of Archer. Three-time defending Division I state champion Paul Klein started things off with a 17-8 major decision to give the Crusaders a 4-0 lead. After Mason Williams lost a 7-2 decision the Crusaders still enjoyed a lead, but that was fleeting. Only Anthony Schneider, Yehia Riles and Matthew Montalbano posted victories in the following eight matches and the Crusaders found themselves in a 27-16 hole. Defending state champion Steven Shields cut the lead to five with a fall, but the Rampage answered right back to reclaim their 11 point lead. With three matches remaining the Crusaders needed three wins and, in the most likely scenario, at least one had to be by a fall. This was a very good time to be able to rely on two-time defending state champion Mason Mauro and state runner-up Taylor Gambill, as both of them responded to the challenge by scoring falls. That gave the Crusaders a precarious 34-33 lead with one match remaining and their second-string 132 lbs. wrestler to go. Granted, that may not seem like a dream scenario, but keep in mind that senior Blaine Eisensohn is probably a second-string wrestler only because he backs up Paul Klein. The young man was 20-2 as a junior, losing only to Airline's Antonio Lococo (12-10) and Rummel's Rick LaCava, and he won the Trygg Memorial and the St. Paul's Invitational. Eisensohn was more than up to the task at hand, taking a 2-0 lead into the second period and scoring a fall in 3:05 to give the Crusaders a 40-33 win and a trip to the semifinals.
