Team Valley 38 - Crusader "A" 26 |
June 26th, 2014 | Written by: Editor |
Team Valley eased into the second round with a 74-9 win over the River Parish Wrestling Club. Pittsburgh, Kansas gave them a challenge in the quarterfinals but fell as everyone else before them, this time 50-27. Their next stop: the semifinals against Brother Martin.
Aside from Yehia Riles at 182 lbs. the Crusaders' most experienced wrestlers are found in the first half of the weight classes. Steven Shields, Mason Mauro and Paul Klein are defending state champions. Taylor Gambill and Mason Williams are state runners-up and, after having what could be considered a "bad" state tournament, Danny Evans still placed fourth. At 106, 113 and 120 though, Team Valley had an Iowa state champion and two runners-up.
Danny Evans started the Crusaders of nicely enough with a pin for an early 6-0 advantage, but that was the last lead they would see. Team Valley countered with a major decision in between two falls, and then negated three point decisions by Riles and Jacob Clapp with two pins to build a 28-12 lead after the 285 lbs. match. Freshman Luke Cotton kept the Crusaders in the match with a fall at 98 lbs. to close the gap to 28-15, but that is when the Iowa lighter weights showed their mettle. The Portillo brothers, Justin and Josh, took care of Shields and the promising freshman Seth Gambill with decisions, and Ryan Leisure did the same with Mason Mauro, giving Team Valley an insurmountable 23 point lead with only three matches remaining. Taylor Gambill, Paul Klein and Mason Williams closed as expected with wins, but it was too late. Team Valley advanced to the finals with a 38-26 win.
* Team Valley coach Carl Valley verified only 26 points for the Crusaders as opposed to the 28 points on the Website bracket.
