Rebels claim 11th championship in 13 years
LHSAA State Wrestling Championship Division II

There was little doubt that Teurlings Catholic would win the Division II team championship for the fourth consecutive year.  There was hope, particularly in Stonewall, Louisiana, at least until late January and the Ken Cole Invitational, that it might be a tight race.  Yet, with 10 finalists and six state champions, the team championship was decided before the finals began.  Teurlings Catholic outscored the Stonewall-based North Desoto Griffins 356.5 to 305 points.  The 56.5-point deficit of the Griffins, though, was the lowest in four years.  Only Holy Cross in 2013 and Parkway in 2019 have interrupted the streak the Rebels started in 2011.

The Rebels finals rout started with undefeated freshman Alex Rozas defeating North Desoto's freshman Jacob Kershaw for the second time at 106 lbs.  Oddly, the Rebels did not win another championship until 138 lbs. when undefeated senior Layne Rivette defeated North Desoto's Collin Bell 8-7.  That match was followed by Rebel senior Ethan Boudreaux, undefeated on the season, defeated Belle Chasse's Caleb Andrews 13-1 MD.  Two matches later junior Hunter Sharon left himself nowhere on the podium to go next season after defeating Brusly's Chris Miller 8-2.  Sharon placed third as a freshman, second as a sophomore and now has the top spot on the podium.  What now?  Two matches later freshman Braedon Simoneaux defeated North Desoto's defending state champion Hunter Addison 6-4 SV.  At the end, senior Kole Hayes pinned North Desoto's Dom Smith in 1:21.

The Griffins got their "licks in" as well, though.  At 152 lbs. freshman Dalton Compton, seeded third, defeated top-seed Brandt Babineaux of the Rebels 3-1 SV.  At 160 lbs. second-seeded Lake Bates got the best of Caddo Magnate's top-seeded Isaac Dees 5-3.

North Desoto coach Dustin Burton seemed pleased with his teams efforts, if playing "air trophy guitar" is in indication of that.

For those who, like the editor, did not receive the memo, Sam Houston made a surprising move.  Senior Pollex Coleman competed at 120 lbs. whereas junior Tyson Roach went up to 126 lbs.  The move worked perfectly for Coleman, who made short work in his finals match.  Roach, however, may have been a tad surprised by second-seeded Brennan Boyer of the Rebels.  Sure, the unseeded Boyer placed fourth at the LACL and won the Ken Cole, but those two matches were right after Roach matches against Southside's Landon Reaux.  The last was at the Ken Cole.  Boyer defeated Dutchtown's Cole Mire, but just prior to that Roach had obliterated Reaux.  As Roach had defeated Mire three times during the season, perhaps the Bronco was not expecting 126 lbs. to be as tough in Division II.  With 5:40 elapsed in the finals match, Roach got the hint as he was down 6-2.  The two wrestlers were standing and a throw counter by Boyer backfired, and Roach took full advantage, scoring five points just before the final buzzer rang.

Rummel sophomore Kaiden Triche won his first state title after a disappointing loss to TC's Brennan Romero in 2022.  Triche was Rummel's only finalist, but the Raiders placed third and have a strong team returning, including the addition of freshman Dominic Durham.

Rather surprisingly, Brusly, in Division II for the first time since 1999, placed fourth behind the efforts of 182 lbs. state champion Anthony Denova and runner-up Chris Miller.

Parkway's Kristofer Mesloh, at 220 lbs., and Carencro's Ledgerick Collins at 195 lbs., captured the remaining Division II titles.

Teurlings Catholic Rebel Ethan Boudreaux capped an undefeated 43-0 records with his third Division II individual championship.  Along the way He won the LACL and the Ken Cole, In this event he pinned his first two opponents in 1:18 and 1:19  He took a little longer, 1:56, to get past his semifinals opponent.  In the finals he was never really challenge, winning handily via a 13-1 major decision.
