Exciting finish to 4th Deep South Bayou
Duals |
Date 30th, 2013 | Written by: Editor |
|
One could not ask for a better finale to the 4th Deep South Bayou
Duals. The event, hosted by
Brusly High School and held in the Baton Rouge River Center, consisted of 40
teams from 37 high schools across the nation, including programs from
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas and
Wisconsin.
Brother Martin narrowly defeated the Dragons of Jefferson
High School of Georgia 29-29 via tie-breaking criteria (it took eight criteria
to break the tie – seven more and it would have been a coin toss) to win their
first Bayou Duals championship.

Gilmore County of Georgia placed third with a
48-24 win over Missouri’s Plate County High School.
Jesuit, despite a quarterfinal win over Gilmer County, place fifth by
defeating North Forsythe, GA 44-27.
Wrightstown High School of Wisconsin denied Baton Rouge Catholic of a team
trophy, when they defeated the Bears 33-25 to place seventh.

Brusly’s Trevor Schermer
Brusly’s Trevor Schermer
exercised two demons on Saturday.
The three-time defending Division III state champion first
defeated Catholic’s defending Division I state champion James Claitor
5-4, handing Claitor his first loss to a Louisiana wrestler since the
2011-12 season. A little
later, he pinned Rummel’s 2013 Division I runner-up Rick Lacava in 3:02.
Claitor defeated Schermer 6-4 at the Catholic Duals on December 7th,
handing Schermer his second loss on the season (his first was to a
Florida opponent). Last year
Lacava recorded two wins over Schermer – 5-2 in the Sam Sara finals and
11-4 at the Louisiana Classic.
Schermer’s wins should catapult him to the top seed position for
the Louisiana Classic in three weeks. Only one Panther wrestler has won
the LA Classic/Lee High Invitational.
That was Virnado Woods, who won the 171 lbs. championship in
1991. Schermer was 6-0 on the weekend. |

Klein’s
drought ends
Paul Klein has been in a bit of a slump.
Of course, for Klein, (after already winning two Division I state
championships) that just means it had been 13 days since he won an Outstanding
Wrestler award. That was rectified
at this event. Though he only
wrestled four matches, he had a first round pin, two major decisions and a
technical fall. Klein, a junior, has
already graduated to the Louisiana
Wrestling News’ highest honor – FREAK OF NATURE. Klein has won OW
awards at the Mandeville and Spartan opens and the Trygg Memorial.

Worthwhile trip for
Wisconsin’s Wrightstown
|
The Wrightstown
Tigers placed seventh by defeating Catholic 33-26, to pick up
the last team trophy.
Hopefully that made the 21-hour trip worth taking. |

A team
trophy must have made the trip bearable, rather than
just driving 21 hours to... |
...this. |

Live Oak over Teurlings Catholic
The two favorites to battle for the Division II state team crown
met for the first and probably only time this season in a dual meet
format. Live Oak won six of the 11 matches wrestled.
Technical falls by Colt Olinde and Jacob Chenevert, pins by Brody
Bonura, Nick Simoneaux and Jonathan Sosa, and a major decision by Cody
Hill over Tristan Lee propelled the Eagles to a 44-30 win.
Teurlings had pins by Travis Santiago and Brock Bonin, a technical fall
by Dakota Hebert and a major decision by Brennan Trosclair. Live Oak
benefitted the most by forfeits, receiving two of the three (one being a
medical forfeit when Brennan Webb was injured). That netted the
Eagles six points, without which the Eagles would have earned only a two
point victory (that is if Live Oak won two of the three matches and all
counted for the same amount of team points). Hence, it was a much
closer match than the final score indicated, and that should lead to a
great state championship. |

Chenevert over Kilchrist 17-2. |

Cody Hill
remains undefeated at the Deep South Bayou Duals
This year’s Deep South
Bayou Duals was the last for Live Oak senior Cody Hill.
But, as he did last year and two years ago at the event, he went
through his matches without a single loss en route to a 23-0 lifetime
record at the event. |
|
Cody Hill defeated Division II rival Tristan Lee for the second time
this season, this time by a major 15-7 decision.

Jesuit's "Young Guns"
|
Jesuit junior
Austin Pfister (photo: left) competed on the Jesuit-B team and
put up a stellar record. He
won all eight of the matches in which he competed.
He pinned five opponents, had a technical fall (15 point lead)
over another and won an 8-6 match over the returning Division II state
champion Jacob Chenevert of Live Oak.
(Now, if someone is miffed about not being singled out after
posting a similar record, well, nepotism happens – Austin’s aunt is a
lady the editor knows and who is good friends with the editor’s sister.) |
Jesuit has a
plethora of young wrestlers who may make an impact at this
year's state championships, and will certainly in 2015.
Among them are (with their DSBD records): |
On the
Jesuit-B team: Brody Martin-106-junior (5-0;) Austin
Ashburn-106-sophomore (3-0); Austin Pfister-113-junior (8-0);
Jordan Giewat-120-freeshman (4-0);Max Grosch-126-junior (7-1).
On the Jesuit varsity team: Joseph
Dupre-113-junior (6-2); Jake Rando-126-freshman (6-2); Jake
Rovira-132-junior (6-2) |

The Pickrens of South Walton
South Walton High School of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, are becoming regulars
on the Louisiana wrestling circuit. Freshman William (106 lbs.) and junior
Cody (145 lbs.) both won the Trygg Memorial (Cody also placed second in 2012 to
Rummel's Matt Calcote).
|
|
William posted a 6-2
record which included an impressive 12-0 major decision over Rummel's
Robert Fairchild. (Above, Pickren takes care of Baton Rouge's Khoa
Bui.) |
Cody was 6-1, only losing
to Rummel's Rick Lacava by two points while pinning five others and
scoring a technical fall. |
