Division II

With Parkway and Live Oak moving to Division I, normally Teurlings Catholic would be the next best bet to win the Division II state championship.  But I believe that spot goes to North Desoto this season.  All 14 Griffins who participated in the 2019 state championships should return to the mats this season.  Joshua Sarpy and Richard Mack, III should be favorites in their weight classes, but I do not think the returning 14 can earn the 87 points they trailed Parkway when it was all said and done last February.

The last time Teurlings Catholic placed lower than third was in 2005.  If any team was "decimated" by graduation, it was the Rebels, who lost half of their 2019 team.  They have 2019 state champion David Bernard returning, and runner-up Charles Travasos, but adding seven wrestlers without state championship experience makes it tough to vie for a team title (just ask Brother Martin in 2017).  The Rebels get the nod over Rayne, just barely, via the leadership of Bernard and the fact that their returning runner-up and third-place finisher are seniors.  Rayne does not have any returning state champions, and aside from runner-up Miles Doucet, the remaining seniors have to jump from 4th and 6th-place to third-place or better to subdue the Rebels.

Shaw's returning team runs in order from first through fourth and are so ranked also via weight classes: Glenn Price 1st) is lighter than Raheem Bonnet (2nd), who is lighter than Ashton Surrency (3rd) who is lighter than Michael Seal (4th).

Carencro placed sixth with only eight entrants.  Seven of them are returning, including state champion Kendrall Williams.  If they can fill all of the weight classes in 2020, they may surpass Shaw and Rayne at the state championships.  As it stands on paper now, though, I predict a seventh-place finish.

Rummel, Belle Chasse, St. Michael and Benton round out the top-10, but they do not have enough returning placers to merit any spots above eighth.

Aside from Live Oak and Parkway the remaining newcomer to Division I is Sam Houston, which will find it difficult to break into the top-10 of division I teams.
