Semifinals

Above: Brandon Cowell of Dutchtown defeated Brother Martin's Kevin Casey 9-1.  Below: In the second meeting of Division I finalists from the 2014 state championships Holy Cross' runner-up George Benoit at 132 pounds left no doubt that he is just fine at the 152 pounds weight class by defeating the defending 152 state champion Matthew Mire of Catholic 9-3.  At the Warrior and Central opens, Mire and Dutchtown's Brandon Cowell, a runner-up at 145 pounds, split finals matches.

Finals

George Benoit (Holy Cross) won via an injury default while leading 3-2 versus Brandon Cowell (Dutchtown)
Benoit struck first in this match between two 2014 Division I runners-up with a single-leg takedown in the first 18 seconds.  Cowell, however, backed into Benoit on bottom, secured a Benoit leg, fought off a whizzer and used another single-leg for a reversal to tie the match after a minute had elapsed.  Benoit got on his feet to try to escape, but Cowell picked him up and placed him none too gently back on the mat, meriting a penalty point for an illegal slam.  As a result Benoit was unable to continue the match and was awarded the title via an injury default.  The slam by Cowell in no manner appeared intentional.

Seeding Implications: Despite that he won the Spartan via a disqualification George Benoit secured top billing at 152 pounds via his 9-3 defeat of Mire, who had previously split tournament finals matches with Cowell.  Cowell gets the nod over Mire due to their last meeting, won by Cowell, as well as that Cowell did score a bona-fide reversal on Benoit, tying the match 2-2, prior to being called for the illegal slam which prevented Benoit from continuing their match.
